An ornate golden flask of oud perfume oil on a white background

Arabian perfume is made for depth and presence. The houses we have chosen here, all based in the United Arab Emirates, work with rich notes such as oud, amber, rose and musk, offer fragrance as concentrated oil as well as spray, and treat the bottle as part of the pleasure. If the style is new to you, begin with one warm note you already love, and let the bottle be your second reason to choose.

Perfume Oil or Spray?

A perfume oil, sometimes called an attar, carries its fragrance in oil rather than alcohol. It is applied straight to the skin, with a rollerball or a dabber, and it stays close to the body: it is noticed when someone leans in, not across a room. A spray carries the scent in alcohol, which lifts it into the air and lets it travel further. Neither is better. An oil feels intimate and slips easily into a bag; a spray gives a fuller trail. We explain the spray strengths in Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne: What the Difference Means.

Nabeel Amber shows the oil side of the style well. It is a concentrated, alcohol-free oil perfume in a 6 ml roll-on, a transparent glass bottle with a gold-tone cap, made to be glided onto the wrists, the neck and behind the ears.

Oud and Amber

Oud, the scent of agarwood, is the note most closely tied to Arabian perfume: deep, woody and resinous, it gives a composition weight and warmth. Amber is softer, a rounded accord rather than a single ingredient, and the two are often paired.

Al Haramain Amber Oud Gold Edition is an oriental eau de parfum with bergamot, amber and oud as its key notes, in a gold-toned rectangular bottle with a matte finish and a clear side panel. Lattafa 24 Carat Pure Gold is an oud-centred blend with spice and soft, sweet undertones, in a gold and rose gold bottle with a clear square cap. Acqua di Nabeel Absolute opens floral and fruity, moves through a spiced heart and settles on oud, musk and vanilla; its frosted bottle shifts from blue to green beneath an ornate gold cap. Nabeel Amber brings the same warmth in oil.

Rose, Florals and Musk

Not every Arabian perfume is dark. Rose and white flowers run through the softer side of the style, usually with musk beneath them, the quiet, skin-like note that keeps a fragrance close.

Khadlaj Harem Al Sultan opens with bergamot, rose and white musk, has rosemary and ylang-ylang at its heart, and rests on sandalwood, amber and frankincense. Shiyaaka, also from Khadlaj, pairs bergamot and pear with gardenia and jasmine over amber, sandalwood and musk. Afnan Souvenir Floral Bouquet is a floral eau de parfum for women, in a round white bottle with a clear dome over a gold floral detail. Al Wataniah Lazuli is lighter again: a citrus top and an aromatic heart over a warm drydown, in blue glass with a gold cap.

How to Layer an Oil Under a Spray

Layering is how many people wear Arabian perfume, and it is simple. Apply the oil first, to clean skin at the pulse points, and give it a minute to settle. Then spray your eau de parfum once or twice over the same places, from a short distance. The oil holds the scent close to the skin; the spray carries it further. Choose two that share a note, amber over amber or a rose over musk, and the result reads as one fragrance rather than two.

Go lightly. A concentrated oil and a rich eau de parfum need very little, and it is easier to add a touch later than to soften too much. If your skin is sensitive, try a small amount on one wrist first.

The Bottles

In these houses the bottle belongs to the fragrance, made to stay on a dressing table long after the first spray. Expect worked metal, coloured glass, gems and small sculptural details.

Khadlaj Malika is a 20 ml bottle in red glass with an ornate gold cap, a scalloped gold base and a gold tag hung on a fine chain. The house's Ornate Vintage-Inspired Eau de Parfum sets a round glass bottle in metal latticework with blue gem accents, a gemmed stopper and an intricate stand. Nabeel Al Batshq Al Sego is an octagonal black and gold bottle with an embossed border, Arabic script and a gold eagle on its top. Lattafa Qaed Al Fursan is a square white-and-gold flacon with geometric detailing and a gold horse motif.

Nabeel's Ornate Black and Silver Eau de Parfum has a conical silhouette, embossed patterning and a silver ship ornament on its cap. Armaf Club De Nuit Milestone Eau De Parfum, bright with citrus, fruit and marine accords, comes in a gold-toned rectangular bottle hung with a chain and circular pendant, with small crystals set in the cap and the pendant. Al Wataniah Ameerati is a transparent glass bottle in golden tones, with Arabic script, a geometric pattern and a curved golden cap.

Keep a decorated bottle upright and out of direct sunlight, and lift it by its base rather than by its ornament.

In Short

Choose by note first. If you love warmth, start with amber or oud; if you prefer softness, a rose or floral with musk beneath it. Then, if you would like to try layering, add the Nabeel Amber oil under the spray you choose.
