A woman holding a jar of body lotion

Fragrance layering is wearing more than one scented product at once so that they build a single impression. The simplest way is to choose a perfume and the shower gel or body lotion made in the same line: the house has already composed them to agree, and the body product gives the perfume a softly scented base to sit on. The second way is to wear a simple, single-note scent, such as rose, musk or vanilla, beneath a richer perfume that shares that note.

Why Layer Fragrance at All?

A perfume on its own sits on a few pulse points. Layering spreads the scent more evenly across the skin, so it reads as a quiet aura rather than a single trail. It also changes how the fragrance wears through the day. Perfume tends to last longer on moisturised skin than on dry skin, so a scented lotion underneath gives it something to hold on to. When the perfume begins to soften, the body product is still there beneath it, carrying the same character.

Layering is also a way to adjust a scent to the day. A body lotion alone is a discreet choice for the office or a warm afternoon. Add the perfume in the evening and the same signature grows fuller without changing.

The Order: Shower, Body Lotion, Perfume

Work from the lightest layer to the most concentrated, and from the whole body to a few points.

  1. Cleanse with the shower gel from your fragrance's line, or an unscented one if the line has none.
  2. Pat your skin almost dry and apply the matching body lotion while the skin is still slightly damp.
  3. Let the lotion absorb for a minute or two.
  4. Apply the perfume to your wrists, the inside of your elbows and the base of your throat. One or two sprays is usually enough once the body product is in place.
  5. Through the day, refresh with a little lotion on your hands and arms rather than more perfume.

Do not rub your wrists together after spraying. It does not harm the perfume, but it hurries the opening notes. Let the scent settle on its own.

Starting in the Shower

A scented shower gel is the lightest layer of all. Much of it rinses away, but it leaves the skin lightly fragranced and sets the tone for what follows.

Carolina Herrera's Good Girl Shower Gel gives a rich, silky lather and carries the Good Girl fragrance, which the house describes as made to layer with the rest of the line. The Good Girl Eau de Parfum opens on almond and coffee, with jasmine sambac at its heart over tonka and sandalwood. From Narciso Rodriguez, the All of Me Scented Shower Gel brings rose and geranium with a white-musk accord, and leaves skin lightly fragranced after showering. The All of Me Eau de Parfum is built on the same three ideas: centifolia rose, bourbon geranium and a white musk blend with a second-skin finish.

A Matching Body Lotion

If you choose only one body product, make it the lotion. It stays on the skin, it is applied all over, and it is where layering makes the greatest difference to how a perfume wears.

Guerlain's Shalimar Lait Divin Pour Le Corps is a light, nourishing body lotion that absorbs quickly and carries the house's signature Shalimar accord. Wear it under Shalimar Eau de Toilette, which opens on bergamot, iris and lily over a warm base of vanilla and amber. Shiseido's Ginza Perfumed Body Lotion has a light, fast-absorbing texture with shea butter and a floral-wood fragrance. The Ginza Eau de Parfum is floral-woody too, with strawberry, jasmine and magnolia over warm woods.

Rabanne's Fame Body Lotion carries the line's jasmine, mango and incense, and the house presents it as a lighter, all-over way to wear the scent. The Fame Eau de Parfum sets those same three notes in a floral-chypre structure. Givenchy's Irresistible Body Lotion is a body milk with a velvety texture and a floral-woody finish. Its partner, Irresistible Eau de Parfum, pairs rose and iris with a neroli and almond milk accord, ambrette and musk, and a cedarwood base.

Layering a Single Note Under a Richer Scent

You do not need a matching line to layer well. A simple scent built around one clear note can sit beneath a more complex perfume and bring that note forward. The rule is to choose a note your perfume already contains. The simple layer then reads as part of the composition rather than a second fragrance competing with it.

  • A vanilla lotion under a perfume with a vanilla or tonka base, such as Shalimar or Good Girl, makes the base feel warmer and closer to the skin.
  • A white musk lotion under a musky floral, such as All of Me, softens the finish and keeps it close.
  • A rose fragrant water under a rose-led perfume, such as Irresistible, brings the flower to the front.
  • A fresh green tea scent under a floral-woody perfume, such as Ginza, adds lightness at the opening.

Roger & Gallet's Rose Eau Parfumée Bienfaisante is a light rose fragrant water with rose essential oil and an Italian mandarin note, made to be sprayed on pulse points or lightly over clothing. Thé Vert Eau Parfumée Bienfaisante, from the same collection, pairs Calabrian lemon with green tea extract and a guaiac wood base. Alyssa Ashley's White Musk Body Lotion is a lightweight hand and body cream with a clean white musk scent, and the house's Vanilla Body Lotion is a hand and body lotion with a delicate vanilla scent and a light texture.

When you layer across houses, keep to two scents, and let the richer one be the perfume. Apply the simple layer first, all over, and the perfume on a few points afterwards.

What to Avoid

  • Two strong perfumes worn together. They tend to blur into each other rather than combine.
  • Scented products from unrelated families, such as a sweet vanilla lotion under a sharp citrus cologne.
  • Spraying more perfume to make up for a layer. Layering should let you wear less, not more.
  • Perfume or scented lotion on broken or irritated skin. If your skin is sensitive, try a new body product on a small area first.

In Short

If you already have a perfume you love, look first for the body lotion from its line. Wear the two together for a week, the lotion every morning and the perfume on a few points, and you will know how much layering adds to the scent you already wear.
